It’s been a summer to remember, or perhaps one to forget.

The optimism of early July, as vaccinations and hopes rose, was quickly dashed by the delta variant and surging covid cases, hospitalizations, and deaths nationwide.

Record-breaking heat waves, wildfires, devastating storms, and floods wracked the globe, as scientists warned of imminent climate disaster. Oh, and there were earthquakes, too.

The world’s athletes gathered in Tokyo for a very strange and spectatorless Olympics.

The president of Haiti was assassinated. And in Afghanistan, the Taliban undid 20 years of U.S. efforts in record time and retook control of the country weeks before the last U.S. soldiers left, stranding thousands desperate to flee and leaving the country in chaos and catastrophe.
