Mending

It's been over a week now since I last posted here. On May 19, my mother-in-law Flora suffered a serious fall. In the ensuing hospitalization, an underlying heart condition was discovered and her condition--bad to begin with--deteriorated rapidly, and she died on Friday. She was a remarkable woman, and I will write more about her in time, but not yet. We have been preoccupied first with her accident and care, then with her death. Yesterday, in the aftermath of emotions and family, I sat down and began embroidering a new patch on my jeans, as we begin now our own mending, both visible and invisible.

The First Cloth of Resistance

Daily Color: “Pick up a needle and thread, and stitch together something particular and honest and beautiful, because we need it.” –Shauna Niequist

My first Cloth of Resistance, representing the first 50 days of the Trump Administration, is currently on display at the Westford Library. Last week, my son and his camera visited the exhibit. (To read more about my Daily Resistance project, please see my blog post here.)

Mothers' Day

My mother, my older sister, and me (photo taken in a photobooth at Grand Central Station in New York City, early 1960s)...

... and an embroidery I made of it in 2016.
